The Nine Heart Comfort Wrap is one in a series of Comfort Wraps I have designed with special attention given to stitch selection, motifs and colours in order to convey a meaningful message.

The idea of a Comfort Wrap first came to me when my cousin, living on the other side of the world, was battling ovarian cancer. I felt so helpless. Geographical distance prevented me supporting her in the usual ways with meals or flowers and phone calls and emails might not come at her darkest moments. I wanted her to constantly feel the abiding love and support our family was sending her. The concept of the Comfort Wrap was born.

My cousin ultimately lost her battle to cancer, but during her months of fighting, she told me how comforted she felt each time she wrapped herself in our love. That comforted me.

he Nine Heart Comfort Wrap is meant to comfort someone that is grieving a loss, especially that of a loved one that has been taken by weaknesses of the heart, like heart failure, heart attacks and strokes. This design was inspired by my friend who loss her brother very suddenly because of a heart attack. It is difficult to find the words to express your condolences, so I turn to my hook.
I use colour, motifs and embellishments to convey the message.

Here is the message of comfort woven into each stitch of this unique wrap:

9 Hearts -
Most teachings of the world agree that 9 is a powerful number that symbolizes divine completeness or represents the meaning of finality. For that reason, 9 hearts is the main design feature of this wrap.

Coloured Heart -
Emphasis is given to a heart(s) to represent the person(s) being remembered by making it in another colour, red for romantic love or pink for love and affection.

Grey Colour-
The grey colour selected, is considered a neutral colour, causing no additional emotional effect but rather bringing balance and calmness.

Comfort -
Perhaps the most significant feature of the Nine Heart Comfort Wrap is your intention while making it. As you think of the recipient you will be weaving into each stitch all the emotional support you can provide to help navigate the grieving journey.

By adapting some of these features, this design can be used for different circumstances as was the case with the lavender example. My friend tragically lost her 3 yr old granddaughter in a car accident. I adapted the colour to match the granddaughter’s amethyst birthstone.

If for yourself, I hope this wrap brings you comfort. If for others, I hope by way of your craft of crochet you can stitch in the comfort and support needed during their time of loss be it death, separation or change of circumstances.

This is a simple repeat pattern made with #5 weight yarn which makes up quickly. The yarn used was Lion Brand Homespun: colour Clouds and Impeccable: but other #5 weight are suitable. It requires 24 oz(680 g) / 740 yds(676m) of main colour with approximately 20 yds /18.5 m of the contrasting colour of red or pink. It is made with 6.5 m crochet hook. Stitches used are slip stitch, half double crochet and double crochet. The finished size is 72” long x 17” wide (182 cm x 44 cm)

The pattern includes lots of pictures for added information and clarification. As well, there is a template for a hang tag explaining the message woven into the Nine Heart Comfort Wrap which can be printed and included with the wrap for gift giving.
