Spiritied Away is probably the most magical film I have ever seen. After having watched it again recently, I decided to make myself a No Face spirit (who initially causes chaos, but ends up knitting!) to be my very own knitting companion, and here is the result!

No Face (Kaonashi) is knit both flat and in the round. First, his face is knit flat and features are added using duplicate stitch. Then we pick up stitches around his entire face, and use German short rows to knit the bend in his neck. After that, it is fairly simple - we knit stockinette stitch in the round, using a few increase rows to help shape the body. We then stuff and close him, and add on mini i-cord arms at the very end. He is knit using DK yarn and 3.75mm needles. You’ll need about 50g of black DK yarn and scrap amounts of white and lilac/pink yarn to make a No Face that stands about 25cm tall. Of course, for a project like this, gauge isn’t particularly important and you can play around with different needles and yarn weights to make yourself a smaller, or bigger, knitting companion. You’ll also need some stuffing, a tapestry needles and some stitch markers.

Kaonashi is a slightly more advanced pattern, due to the short rows. Skills required include:
casting on and joining in the round
knitting
purling

duplicate stitch
i-cord
short rows (German or otherwise)
