No Rules Cowl
The No Rules Cowl is for experimentation! I am normally a real stickler for gauge, but I find knitting a cowl is always a bit more spontaneous. If my stitch choice ends up making the cowl a bit looser than expected, it is the best opportunity to wear a lovely vintage broach (always better a cowl be a bit too loose than too tight!) If you are using a thinner yarn, you can just add some stitches, or use the ball band information to get a rough estimate of the number of stitches per inch and go from there. I find that 23 inches is my sweet spot! I have also given some approximate stitch counts for other weights of yarn.
I love knitting this cowl because it is NON-STOP KNITTING! Round and round I go, I don’t even bother with a stitch marker! If you are thinking of knitting this flat, I have provided instruction here, but don’t think I am happy about it! If you must knit flat, I suggest a mattress stitch seam, nearly invisible. I encourage those who have never knit on circular needles to try the No Rules Cowl in the round…but it’s not a rule!

8 mm 16’-24’ circular needle OR 8 mm straight needles
