Noctiluca
Mittens with a contemporary expression - knit in the traditional Selbu mitten method with a thumb gusset.
«Noctiluca» is a glowing saltwater plankton, and this design is inspired by a 50´s mitten pattern (Skibladner) from the book «Votter og Vanter» Bjelland, Dietrichson and Egge (1955).
yarn: Hillesvåg Ask, 315m (344yd) / 100g
MC: 50g Cream col. 6057
CC: 50g Charcoal col. 6056
Alternative: Rauma Finull/Pt2, 175m (191yd) / 50g, or other similar wool yarns.
needles: 2,5mm (US 11/2), DPNs or circular needle (magic-loop)
gauge: 32 sts / 40 rows = 10 cm (4inch) in stranded pattern
size: to fit average womans hand;
circumference: 20 cm
length: 27 cm.
notions: 4 stitch markers, stitch holder or waste yarn, tapestry needle
To make a mens version of this charted pattern, you may use a DK weight yarn (like; Rauma 3-ply) and 3mm (US 21/2) needles, and follow the pattern exactly. This will add both length and witdh to make it fit an average men´s hand.
To alter the women´s size; try size 2,25 mm (US 1) needles to make them smaller / size 2,75 mm (US 2) needles to make them larger.
The pattern includes written instructions and charts.
If you are not accustomed to stranded knitting from a chart - this pattern may be a challenge.
