Nolan was inspired by my newest nephew, whose gender was a surprise until his arrival. The goal was to create a hat that would be suitable for a boy or a girl, and Nolan fit the bill. Once I had the idea, it seemed only natural to add sizes for larger infants, toddlers, and children. As an added bonus, the hat has so much stretch that even smaller sizes can accommodate larger heads when you add extra length! It doesn’t get any better than that!

Yarn: Sportweight or DK, approximately 75 (100, 125, 150) yards per hat. The solid hat pictured is knit in Huckleberry Knits Nootka Merino Sportweight in the Huckleberry colorway, while the striped hat is knit in String Theory Hand-Dyed Merino DK in the Nevirrik colorway.

Needles & Notions: 1 set of 3.25 mm double pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge; 1 stitch marker; darning needle

Gauge: Approximately 12 stitches to 2 inches over in garter rib (unstretched)

Sizes: Newborn (Infant, Toddler, Child) or approximate head circumferences of at least 13 (17, 19, 21) inches when stretched. Garter rib has a good deal of stretch. With extra length added, the child’s size can easily fit an adult. Just be mindful of yardage when adding length!
