You’ve heard of a Sou’wester - but what about a Nor’Aister? well, what else do you call a hat made from Aister Oo, wool from Shetland, to the far north east of the British Isles?

Both beanie hat and headband are worked in the round, with rib borders. They measure approx 50 cm / 20” around - adding or subtracting sets of the motif mean you could adjust the size, or you could experiment with different size needles - I used 2.75mm.

I used approx 21g of background colour for the hat. Aister Oo is approx 50g / 142m. You could use four different colours, as I have, or try working with just two? For the hat, I used Blosta, Nort Blue Geo, Sooth Blue Geo and Moonshine; and for the headband, Ayre o da Kames, Moonshine, Blosta and Boitan. There could be lots of variations and combinations…….. the sea has so many colours…….

The charts are slightly different for hat and headband, showing some possible variations in spacing.

I’m missing the sea……..
