Norse by Norse West
By Lizabeth Towers

From today through November 19, 2023, (Central Standard Time) if you purchase this Norse by Norse West pullover pattern, the Norse by Norse West Cowl pattern (regularly $5.00) will be free.

My father’s people come from Norway. I was raised in Minnesota. The result? A Nordic design by a sort-of-Norse person who lives in the Western hemisphere. Norse by Norse West is a design that “crosses over.” It’s traditional, yet contemporary. The knitting looks impressive, yet it’s one of the easiest stranded designs you’ll ever knit. It looks great on your brother, your aunt, or yourself.

This pattern is dedicated to my Grandma Mabel, who sang as she cooked and made the world more beautiful. She patiently encouraged my knitting.

Norse by Norse West is worked seamlessly from the top down, beginning with the neck ribbing. Then short rows are added to raise the back neck before working the stranded colorwork yoke. At the separation round, the sleeves stitches are placed on hold and then the body is worked down to the ribbed hem. Finally, sleeves are worked from the top down to the ribbed cuffs.

Note: Model is wearing size 4 with 3.25” 8 cm positive ease. Sizes listed are the finished sweater measurements, designed to be worn with 2 through 8” 5 through 20 cm positive ease. Some people whose bust is proportionately larger than the rest of their body, a D cup or larger, achieve a better fit by measuring horizontally directly under the arms (which is the high bust measurement), adding 2” 5 cm, and choosing that size.

Gauge:
20 sts and 28 rounds = 4” 10 cm in single color Right Twist Vertical Stripe Stitch in the round on larger needles after blocking.
20 sts and 28 rounds = 4” 10 cm in stranded colorwork in the round on larger needles after blocking.
Note: Please take time to check your gauge. Treat your gauge swatch just as you will treat your knitting. Knit your swatch in the round on the needles you will be using and block it as you will block your garment. Knitters’ gauge varies. This is normal! Go up or down a needle size if needed to achieve the correct gauge. Many knitters find that to get gauge on stranded colorwork, they need to go up one needle size. Be sure to check your gauge over the stranded colorwork and main fabric separately and adjust needle sizes accordingly, if needed.

Approximate Yarn Amounts Needed:
Main Color (grey): Approximately 807 (923, 1017, 1129, 1238) (1385, 1504, 1625, 1746, 1936) yds
739 (845, 930, 1033, 1132) (1268, 1375, 1487, 1598, 1771) m
Contrast Color 1 (white): Approximately 35 (40, 44, 47, 52) (59, 66, 71, 79, 85) yds
32 (37, 41, 43, 48) (54, 61, 65, 72, 79) m
Contrast Color 2 (black): Approximately 97 (109, 121, 134, 149) (165, 180, 194, 209, 234) yds
90 (101, 112, 123, 137) (152, 165, 178, 192, 214) m
Contrast Color 3 (red): Approximately 16 (19, 21, 21, 24) (27, 29, 31, 35, 37) yds
15 (18, 20, 20, 22) (25, 27, 29, 32, 35) m

Yarns to Try:
Sample is knit in Cloudborn Superwash Merino Worsted Twist, 220 yds 201 m per 100 g. It has sadly been discontinued. Select a comparable yarn, a somewhat light worsted weight, preferably in 100% wool or wool blend, which has good memory and a slight tooth so it performs well in stranded colorwork. Wool blocks nicely so the garment will be smooth at the increases. The fabric achieved at this gauge is neither stiff nor loose. Try: Queensland Collection Falkland Worsted, We Are Knitters Merifine, Jill Draper Makes Stuff Hudson, Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted Superwash, Willow Yarns Daily Worsted, Adriafil New Zealand, Dream in Color Classy, Cascade 220 Superwash Merino.

Notions:
Stitch holders or waste yarn, stitch markers, tapestry needle, blocking tools
