This “North Star” hat features a Nordic star with some other mish-mashed Fair Isle motifs showing the universal captivation with the shining North Star. The stranded colorwork in the hat gives the final product a wonderfully dense quality that will keep heads warm on blustery winter evenings. Classic and timeless, this hat will be sure to integrate itself seamlessly into your life and those of loved ones for years to come.

You should be knitting at a gauge of 38 stitches by 45 rounds in a 4 by 4 inch square. I used Nature Spun Sport and wound up needing 2 balls of my Main Color and only 1 of my Contrast Color. That equals to about 210-220 yards of MC and about 130-140 of CC. I used US size 2 16” circular needles and sized down to shortie circulars and then finally double pointed needles; however you feel comfortable working in the round is how I’d suggest you choose your needles along with making sure you maintain gauge. I have been told a knit tightly so be sure to swatch to find your personal gauge.

I’d say this is a beginner friendly design for the first-time colorworker; there are no wonky repeats, everything is quite easy to memorize and visualize so you’ll chug right along like the original 3D printers. For more experienced knitters, this can be a fun weekend project for last minute gifts or a stash buster project.

The final dimensions of the hat come to 9.5 inches tall and 22 inches around. Though the final fabric knitted up is quite dense it still has a lot of give, if worked with suggested yarn or a comparable natural fiber, and can fit heads up to 24-25 inches.
I’ve put a pom-pom on mine which is totally optional for your hat.
