North Star Sweater
My North Star Sweater has been designed to replace a much loved sweatshirt which is decades old and falling apart at the seams. After hearing me moaning – again! - after searching fruitlessly for a new one, my husband said ‘so why don’t you knit one!’ so I did!
Named for the North Star - on a clear evening we can see this and many others so clearly and I never cease to wonder at the vastness of the universe. It also happens to be the name of the cinema to which my now husband and I went on our first date!
Designed to replicate the comfortable shape and fit of a sweatshirt, this sweater starts with a stepped hem before being joined to work in the round with an easily memorised stranded colourwork design.
Steeks are inserted at the armscyes and the front and back neck and short rows are worked back and forth at the shoulders to ensure a good fit. After the steeks are secured and cut, stitches are picked up for the sleeves and the sleeves are knitted top down. Finally, stitches are picked up around the neck and a ribbed neckband is worked.
