Northfield Mittens
The Northfield Mittens are a perfect opportunity to use up worsted weight stash yarn. Knitted on US 6 (4 mm) double-pointed needles with an afterthought thumb, they work up quite quickly, and snowflake motifs on the back of the hands keep the work interesting and make the final product beautiful to look at. This design is reminiscent of traditional nordic motifs. Stranded color work makes wonderful winter accessories as the floats make a thicker and warmer material.
The Northfield Mittens are worked entirely in the round starting with ribbed cuffs and stockinette stitch in stranded colorwork for the hands. The fingers decrease gradually and then are bound off using a kitchener stitch.
These mittens are worked in two colors, and require 50 (100) 100 meters of pattern color and 100 (100) 150 meters of background color. Be sure to choose yarns with high contrast. The design is available in three adult sizes, to fit hand sizes ranging from 7 to 10 inches measured from the end of the wrist to the tips of the fingers.
