Norwegian rose mittens in the selbu tradition.
This is an old pattern that I have redesigned.
The rose is known in Norway as Værhornsrosa, or the Ram’s horn rose.
Its clear origins unknown, but knitting stars like this have been found on old textiles and pattern libraries from Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany dating back to the middle ages.

In the middle ages, when electricity was still unknown, the stars were loved as symbols of life and energy.
Stars were often knitted into pillows and nightgowns, as protecting symbols against the darkness of the night and the unknown.
For the same reason, stars were also knitted into mittens and clothing used in wintertime -
as winter was considered the night of the year.

The pattern includes graphic charts in full crisp detail
of right hand, left hand, thumb and lace pattern for cuffs.

Sizing depends a lot how tight or loose you knit.
I always suggest making a test sample first.
