This Norwegian Ski Sweater was inspired by the colors and designs of the Art Nouveau movement, and constructed in the traditional fashion as interpreted by Elizabeth Zimmerman. It is knitted in Sport Weight yarn in the round and features hems at the bottom, inside the sleeves and inside the boatneck.

The finished sweater shown here was designed using EZ’s “percentage system.” I found that the arm did not give me enough ease, and so I’ve given instructions for larger sleeves for all nine sizes, as well as the percentage system method.

BONUS: Since this sweater is steeked and the sleeves are sewn in, you may use the sleeve size of your choice with the body of your choice. Please be aware of the need for more yarn if you choose a larger sleeve size.

Difficulty/Skills needed: This would make an excellent first sweater for a knitter who is already familiar with stranded knitting, but is also easy enough for an adventurous newer knitter. Besides basic knitting skills you will need to familiarize yourself with stranded knitting, increasing, hems, steeking, and sewing in sleeves.

Materials List:

Yarn: Nature Spun Sport Weight Bamboo, 4 oz, 184 yds per skein 2 (2,3,3,3,4,4,4,4) skeins, Fanciful Blue 4 oz, 8 (9,9,10,11,12,13,14,15) skeins

Needles: Size 3 (3.25) 29” circulars for cast on and hem. Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular, 29” for body of sweater, Size 3 (3.25) dpns for cast on and hem of sleeves, Size 5 (3.75 mm) dpns, and Size 5 (3.75 mm) 16” for larger portion of sleeve if desired. Or sizes to obtain gauge.

Notions: Markers (at least two for sleeves, lots more if you like to use them for setting up your repeats.) Tapestry needle. Also very helpful for stranded knitting is a magnetic board such as those made by Loran. Many people use Post-its to keep track of their place.

Gauge: 28 st and 34 rows over 4” on size 5 (3.75 mm) needles.

Size information: Pattern is provided for finished measurement of chest sizes 32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64).
