This pattern was inspired by the various “cabbage patch” hats that have been flying around Facebook. I tried a few patterns out there and none really turned out how I liked, so I made up my own pattern.

This pattern starts at the bottom and is knit with 2/3 of the hat in ribbing and 1/3 in loops that will form the “bangs.” There are many ways to make bangs, but I wrote up the way that I like best. Of course the hats for the younger children have fewer rows of bangs than the hats for older children.

I used Cascade 220 Superwash because it is soft, warm, washable, AND has several colors that are perfect for hats designed to look like hair. Of course feel free to use any worsted weight yarn that works for you.

I chose to make braids for this hat, but you could easily not braid the pig-tails and have that look instead. If you choose the pigtail option, you may want to take some time to sew through the strands that form the hair so that they won’t pull out. A bow or ribbon place over the sewn area will hide the sewing.

Finally, finish the hat with the decoration of your choice. I’ve used crocheted flowers, ribbons with buttons, and store-bought hairbands.

I hope you enjoy it!
