So there’s this style of knit hat called “Fisherman’s Kep” from the Shetland Islands. It has a patterned hat band, and it stands up taller than most hats, with a tassel at the top, so you can wear it tipped off to one side.

But usually it’s made out of traditional Fair Isle patterns, in muted colors.

This is my version of a Fisherman’s Kep:

I was just playing around with some leftover scraps of yarn when I knit this, and some people from my Fair Isle sweater group suggested I should write up some of my hat patterns. So here it is. I didn’t take notes when I was knitting, so this is my best reconstruction of what I did. If you find any problems with the pattern (I don’t think you will, although I’m a little unsure about total yardage) - please drop me a line and let me know.

I’m not sure which black yarn I used, but the Berroco should work nicely for this pattern.
