This design was originally created for, and published in Glasgow University Knits (2022), a collection of designs inspired by the architecture of Glasgow University.

This top-down open-fronted cardigan was inspired by the Art Nouveau-style windows found in some of the buildings at Glasgow University Gardens. The cabled panels at the lower edge of the cardigan create a gentle A-line shape, with curving organic forms that flow across the fabric. The rest of the cardigan is very simple in comparison, making a blank background canvas against which the cable pattern shines.

NOTES
This cardigan is worked from the top down. The body is worked flat, beginning with the back and left and right fronts, with some short row shaping at the shoulders. After the back is joined to the fronts, the body is gently shaped with randomly spaced increases and cable panels to create an A-line shape.
The hem is finished with an i-cord cast-off, with the end of the cast-off left on waste yarn.
The sleeve caps are worked as set-in sleeves using short row shaping, and the sleeves are then worked down to the cuff in the round. Stitches for an edging are then picked up all around the inner edge of the cardigan. At the beginning of each row of the edging, a yarn-over stitch is added– the purpose of this is to provide stitches along each side of the edging. When the edging is complete, the held stitches from the hem cast-off are picked up again to cast-off these side stitches and all of the edge stitches. This provides a seamless cast-off edge to the hem and inner edges of the cardigan.
The cardigan can either be worn entirely open or fastened with a hook and eye closure. It could also be modified to have traditional button-bands, by working button-holes in one side of the edging – if intending to wear this way, with the bands overlapped, 2˝/(5 cm) should be subtracted from the measurements given in the schematic.
