Nutkin was the second design in my Miss Potter Sock Club 2, and is now available as an individual download ! The design is of course, inspired by Squirrel Nutkin.

Nutkin was a very cheeky red squirrel, who lived with his brother and cousins in a wood at the edge of a lake.

In the middle of the lake was an island, where the grumpy owl Old Brown lived. One Autumn, Nutkin and his friends sailed over to the island to feast on the ripe nuts but Old Mr Brown wasn’t too keen on the idea !

With this design, I wanted to create the feeling that Nutkin might have had whilst he was scurrying around the island searching for tasty treats.

The tall trees that covered the island run down the centre of the front of the sock, and also down the back of the leg. The trees are then flanked either side by towers of stylised acorns that I’m sure Nutkin would make short work of !

This is a fun and engaging design, and looks wonderful in a tonal or semi-solid yarn.

The pattern includes both written, and charted instructions.

I used Eden Cottage Yarns Brimham, in ‘Summer Harvest’ and ‘Coppice’.
