Third in my line of ugly Christmas socks… O’ Tannenbaum, Christmas tree socks!

Are you a tree hugger who doesn’t want a Christmas tree sock? Just not a fan of holiday knits? Sweet! Knit this sock up with a Stockinette Stitch brown foot, omit the presents, and you got yourself a lovely evergreen tree sock.

This sock is 3 dimensional, but it doesn’t require too much deviation from a standard sock to achieve this affect! (And don’t worry if you hate purling, this pattern really doesn’t have nearly as much purling as it might first appear!) It uses primarily increases and decreases to create its shape, along with a few other tricks. There is some seaming involved for the tree.

These trees are knit top down. The sock has a heel flap heel, which could be easily substituted if desired. These socks are wearable in slippers, and wearable in shoes if you just omit the presents!

Decorate these trees however you desire! Cover them with decorative buttons for ornaments, stitch on strands of metallic yarn to emulate tinsel, or leave them completely plain! Sewing a star onto the top of the tree may cause it to droop ever so slightly, see photo 2 for an example.

The tree skirt (the foot) is knit with a cable pattern. But this could easily be substituted with any other preferred stitch pattern!

Gauge for this pattern is not crucial, and some minor variation can be allowed. Please note that if you do use Hawthorne, it is a thicker fingering weight yarn, and you may need to size down to US 1s to achieve gauge, then switch to US 2s for the heel flap and foot.

Recommended for folks who have knit socks before. Though instructions are written in the pattern, I am not writing why things are done, just the how to do things. This pattern is recommended for advanced or intermediate knitters. Not recommended for beginners, but beginners are certainly welcome to try!

Though the Color A and Color B should be had in the quantity listed, scrap quantities are likely sufficient for the trunk and presents.

Sizes in Pattern:
• Child’s Large/Woman’s Small (approximately women’s shoe size US 5-7)
• Woman’s Medium (approximately women’s shoe size US 7.5-9)
• Woman’s Large/Men’s Small (approximately women’s shoe size US 9.5-10)

Note about “Child’s Large”: Sizes 9-12 years will likely be size Small in the adult sizes pattern, and sizes 12+ will likely be size Medium or Large in the pattern. This may require adjustment of the foot length, but should otherwise match the pattern’s instructions.

• Color B: 100 – 150 yards in sock weight yarn for trunk
o Pattern uses Knitpick’s Stroll Tweed in Reindeer Heather
• Color C: 200 – 300 yards in sock weight yarn for tree skirt
o Pattern uses Knitpick’s Stroll in Hollyberry
•Color D/Present Color A: 30 yards in sock weight yarn
o Pattern uses Knitpick’s Stroll in White
• (4 ) US 1 DPN
• (4) US 2 DPN
• Tapestry/Yarn Needle

Gauge:
Stockinette Stitch on US 2s: 9 stitches x 11 rows in 1 inch
Garter Stitch on US 2s: 8 stitches x 16 rows in 1 inch
