Cables can produce a fabulous texture and depth and when I came across this lovely cable stitch with so much variety I thought, O Why Knot! The cables have a wonderful richness and movement, and create a beautiful fabric with that continuous flow. It’s an easy stitch pattern to memorise, yet has enough variety happening that it is sure to entertain.

O Why Knot! Cowl is worked in the round until the full back depth is reached. Once the back is bound off, the front section is knit flat, working decreases and finishing with a final point.

SIZE
26”/65 cm circumference, 10”/25 cm deep at back and 20.5”/51.5 cm full depth at front.

MATERIALS
Yarn – DK weight:
Approximately 550 yds/503 m
Shown in Rowan Baby Merino Silk DK (66% merino/33% silk, 147 yds/134 m per 1.8 oz/50 g skein), in colour 685/Emerald.

Needles:
US 4/3.5 mm needles (32”/80 cm circulars)
US 6/4 mm needles (32”/80 cm circulars)
The cowl is worked in the round. The final front section is worked flat and can be knit with circulars or straight needles, whichever is most comfortable.
Use size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge:
32 sts x 30 rows = 4”/10 cm in O Knot Cable (with larger needles, based on the 20st centre repeat, after blocking)
