I was so certain I had 7 wooden buttons for this cardigan! When the buttonhole-band was finished I detected that there was only 6… Fortunately, I had an acorn button in my drawer – hence the name of my cardigan. And happily, I found that with the mix of sts it was great to mix the buttons as well

The Oak Button Cardigan is worked top-down and seamlessly.
The different textured patterns create a unique look and makes the knitting interesting!

The upper back is knit top-down and back and forth, starting from a small “yoke” in garter-st, shaped by short-rows to create slightly slooping shoulders, followed by the stitch-patterns. When you reach the underarms sts work is left on holders while working the fronts.
The upper left and right fronts are knit top-down and back and forth, starting from picked-up sts along the shoulders. As for the back you are starting from a small “yoke” in garter-st. Thereafter new sts are cast-on for neck and work is continued in the stich-patterns.
The lower body is worked top-down and back and forth to the bind-off, in stitch-patterns. The hem is worked in rib-pattern. The sleeves are worked top-down and in the round from picked up sts around the armholes.
The cuffs are worked in rib-pattern. The neck and front edges are worked from picked-up sts.

Size 1: newborn – 1 month 37 cm/14.5” / Size 2: 6 months 44 cm/17.75” / Size 3: 1 – 2 years 51 cm/20” Size 4 - 5 years: 63 cm/24.75” / Size 5: 6 yrs– 8 yrs 72 cm/28”

Materials
Yarn: I recommend that you use a fingering weight yarn that knits up to gauge. It is important that you work according to gauge to achieve a great result! I used Brooklyn Tweeds “Loft”, in the colour-way Pumice to work the cardigan. This yarn is of fingering weight and comes in skeins of 50 gr/1.76 oz and 251 m/275 yards. You will need approximately 300/400/530/660/780 m = 330/440/580/720/850 yards of above yarn. Needles: straight, or circular needle(s), needle size 3 mm/US2.5 to work the upper body and lower body.
You may use the same needle(s) to work the neckline and button-bands. A set of DPNS, size 3 mm/US2.5 to work the sleeves. Notions: 1 removable stitch-marker, cable needle, separate holders, buttons 12 – 13 mm/0.5” across, tapestry needle, blocking tools. A row counter is always useful.

Gauge
27 sts and 34 rows in garter, the moss-st and the cable-pattern = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4”, after washing/blocking.
