The Oakfield Cowl combines two of my favorite design elements: plentiful cables and crisp twisted ribbing. Knit in lovely Merino DK from String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn, the cowl is knit top-down and ends in a gentle flare that sits nicely around the neck. Pair the cowl with the Oakfield Mitts for a matching set!

This pattern contains both fully charted and written instructions.

Recommended Yarn:
String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn Merino DK — 100% superwash merino — 280 yds (256 m) to 113 g per skein. Shown in colorway Sterling.

As Tanis of String Theory recently closed her shop, a recommended substitute is:

Marianated Yarns Playtime DK, one skein (MC) — 100% superwash merino — 274 yds (251 m) per 100 g skein.

Cowl uses approximately 245 yds (224 m) for Size Medium and 280 yds (256 m) for Size Large. Yardage estimates for both sizes include an approximate 10% cushion for gauge differences.

The superwash properties of both yarns will help the cowl block to dimensions; if using a non-superwash wool, I recommend knitting the Size Large.

Sizing:
Medium: 19” (48 cm) around body and 25” (64 cm) around base, 10” (25 cm) high

Large: 21” (53 cm)around body and 27” (69 cm) around base, 10” (25 cm) high.

Blocked Gauge:
27 sts and 30 rounds to 4” (10 cm) in cable pattern (centered over motif), worked in the round.

PLEASE NOTE: Samples were worked using a US 6 (4 mm) needle with a US 7 (4.5 mm) for bind-off, but as I tend to knit fairly tightly, I’ve listed needles one size smaller. Changes in gauge will affect finished size, look of patterning, and amount of yarn used. To meet these dimensions, be sure to use needle size that gives gauge.

Needles:
US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, 16” (40 cm) length, with a US 6 (4 mm) needle for bind-off, or sizes needed to get gauge.

Other Materials:
3 stitch markers (one distinctive to mark beginning of round), cable needle in appropriate size, tapestry needle.
