This ocean wave–inspired pouch was originally designed to be a bottle holder, which “catches” your drink — a friendly reminder to stay hydrated. With an insert, it can also be used as a little phone bag when you go out for a walk.

From the bottom up, the three patterns in the design represent ocean waves, bubbles in the sea-foam, and the calm surface of the water. When the bottle is half full, the liquid looks like waves rising and falling behind the bubbles.

Though the pattern requires switching colors along the way, you don’t need to cut off the yarn until the entire project is finished, so there are also fewer yarn tails to weave in at the end.

The strap is made with the Tunisian simple stitch. I like the smooth texture the simple stitch brings to the project. If you are not familiar with Tunisian simple stitch, the PDF provides step-by-step guiding images and a link to a video demonstration of the stitch.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

The PDF is written in English, and it includes:

  • A written pattern (in US terms)
  • Step-by-step instructions
  • Guiding images for each step

Crochet stitches used in this project:

  • Chain Stitch
  • Slip Stitch
  • Single Crochet Stitch
  • Half Double Crochet Stitches
  • Double Crochet Stitch
  • Treble Crochet Stitch
  • Tunisian Simple Stitch

Yarn

  • Blue: medium 4, 100% mercerized cotton, approx. 68yds
  • White: medium 4, 100% mercerized cotton, approx. 45yds (Yarn that is less stretchy is recommended; Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn was used in making the bottle holder in the image.)

Tools:

  • Crochet hook size: G/7 – 4.50 MM
  • Yarn needle: any size, as long as the yarn can go through the eye, and the needle can go through stitches
  • Stitch markers, at least two (in guiding images, safety pins are used as alternatives)
  • Scissors

Based on the recommended yarn and tools, the pouch measures approximately 5” tall and 3.5” in diameter. It can fit a water bottle that is up to 3.25” in diameter.

You can adjust the length of the strap by increasing or decreasing the repeats of the steps. For reference, 83 repeats will result in approximately 35”. Please refer to the notes in the PDF for more details. Keep in mind that the strap might stretch when you add heavier items in the pouch. When fully stretched, the length will be approximately 40”.
