Octade
Octade has a doubled brim to keep warmth in and wind out, thereby preventing sore ears.
The crown is shaped with eight spokes, giving a smooth appearance and a clean aesthetic.
The brim is kept in good shape, so that fit is sustained with wear, by working in twisted rib on the reverse side. When worn, you will not perceive the twisted stitches, they work their magic in secret.
This pattern contains three sizes that will fit a range of head sizes, from teens through large adults. The length of the hat is tailored to each recipient.
Materials
- 1 skein1 of Vintage Purls Superstar Sport Edition (70% Polwarth, 20% Silk, 10% Black Merino; 256 metres / 280 yards per 100g skein). The green model is a size medium and used 75g of yarn. The blue model is a size large and used 91g of yarn.
- 3.25mm 40cm circular needle. For working the ribbed hem. Ensure this is a size smaller than the needle you use for the body of the hat.
- 3.50mm 40cm circular needle or size that gives you gauge.
- 3.50mm (or size that gives you gauge) double-point needles or long circular for Magic Loop (whichever you prefer) to work the crown. 1 stitch marker.
Gauge
28 stitches and 30 rows in 10cm (4”) in blocked stocking stitch.
Stitch gauge is essential, row gauge is less important so don’t fret if that is a little off.
Yarn will change gauge with blocking, the pattern allows for this. Your unblocked gauge will be different to your blocked gauge.
Size
Instructions are presented for three sizes: small, medium and large
- Small fits a head approximately 50cm/20” around.
- Medium fits a head approximately 55cm/22” around.
- Large fits a head approximately 60cm/24” around.
The length is adjustable, you will work to your unique requirements.
The actual circumference of finished and blocked hat: 37cm/15”, 43cm/17”, 49cm/19.5”. Choose a size at least 10cm/4” less than your head circumference for a snug fit.
