Octagonal Winged Shawl
This shawl is constructed by knitting a center medallion; stitches are then picked up and knit on either side of the medallion to form the “wings”. The design/graph of the medallion is based on a chart (Figure 76, Lace 25) from A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G. Walker.
The medallion measure a width 19.5 inches and the total width of the shawl is 65 inches. The height is 15 inches. The wings can very easily be made longer by knitting more repeats of the lace patterns.
The yarn used for this shawl is Madelinetosh Sport yarn; it was made with yarn left over from another shawl (Angles and Lines). The weight of the shawl is 296 grams, which after calculation equals exactly 800 yards/732 meters or 2.96 skeins. This does not account for any ends or fudge factors, so I would recommend buying a fourth skein of yarn.
