Experience Level: Advanced Beginner

The October Cape is a soft cowl-necked cape designed to keep the shoulders and torso toasty. I worked mine up using a strand of fingering weight mohair and a strand of fingering slub yarn held together. The combination is texturally appealing and amazingly soft.

As we hop indoors and out this season, it’s handy to have a quick piece to toss over the head. This cape has you covered. Not only is it a great transitional piece in regard to the seasons, but it is a fantastic skill-transitional knitting project. If you have been shying away from knitting garments, this project is a wonderful way to start knitting pieces that will help you get closer to achieving your sweater dreams.

Construction Details
The October Cape is worked in the round from the neck down. Increases are made at intervals around the yoke to create an a-line shape. The increases are worked as closed yarn overs, which means that on the increase round, yarn overs are worked. On the following round, all yarn overs are knit through the back loop and twisted closed. It is my favorite subtle increase because it does not stretch out neighboring stitches.

Finished Measurements:
24.5 (28.5)” neck circumference
65.5 (86)” bottom circumference
21 (25)” length when laid flat.

Yarn:
550 (850) yards of a slub or wool yarn in a fingering weight (CYCA #1)
and 550 (850) yards kid mohair yarn in a fingering weight (CYCA #1).
The yarns will be held together for the piece.
To work the cape in a single strand, use 550 (850) yards of a worsted weight (CYCA #4) yarn.
My sample was made with one strand Yarn Snob “Slubby Dubby” (90% Superwash Merino, 10% Nylon; 437 yards / 100 g) and one strand Yarn Snob “A Fluffy Silk Mohair” (72% Kid Mohair, 28% Silk; 459 yards / 50 g).

Gauge: 14.5 stitches and 20 rounds = 4” in stockinette stitch.

Needle: US 9 (5.5 mm) 24” and 32” circular needle or size needed for gauge. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Additional materials: stitch marker, tape measure, tapestry needle.
