Ages ago, I designed the Ode to Joy pattern with a very contrived set of colors which were carefully thought out. Since then I’ve wondered how it would turn out if I just randomly chose a bunch of colors and threw them together.
This pattern is a bit more than that, though, and offers the knitter a lot of guidance in choosing colors. A fingering or light-sport weight yarn is recommended and suggestions are provided for disguising and combining different yarn-weights as you knit. (not all brands of fingering weight yarn are the same.)
For the curious out there - Ode to Joy was charted from Beethoven’s music of the same name (7 notes = 7 colors). The “random” version is a math curiosity - I wondered how many different variations were possible with 7 colors (5040). I knew I wouldn’t knit all 5,040 so this pattern is the result of my quest to help make some sense of where to place the 7 colors so you can more or less get what you want.
