Ode to New Zealand
Calling all Kiwis! Ode to New Zealand is a mosaic overlay pattern I designed to pay homage to the beautiful country. I visited it a few years ago and just absolutely fell in love with it! Ode to New Zealand is an intermediate level pattern as it includes diagonal stitches (that can be replaced to make the pattern easier if need be). There are tutorial photos to show you how to do these stitches, as well as a video. The PDF pattern is written in U.S. terminology and includes the full written pattern in a row-by-row format with progress photos for each of the rows of the smaller patterns. (There are no CAL photos for the large kiwi section). There is also an X’d graph for those who prefer to read from a graph. The written format is in a new, easier to read layout! Also included is a printer-friendly PDF with enlarged graphs and a beginner’s guide to overlay mosaic crochet.
I chose to make mine with a 5mm hook and worsted weight (4 weight) yarn. I used Red Heart yarn in Soft White, Cherry Red and Black. Approximately 3 skeins each of black and soft white were used and a half skein of cherry red. Using different weighted yarns and hook sizes will result in a different dimension to your project. It is perfectly fine to work with what you are comfortable with; just know you may need to add more repeats (or remove some) to suit your needs. The final size of my design (minus the fringe) was 40” wide by 57” long.
