Doubleknit hat is completely reversible and can be worn with either color out!

The first colder nights of early fall bring with it cozy ideas of fair-isle knits and Scandinavian Ski sweaters to keep you toasty when the real cold gets here. But I am usually in ‘winter denial ‘until much later and then often around the darker times of the year, I am longing for the lazy, warm days of late summer with the buzzing of bees in the air. What to do? I was in no way ready to knit snowflakes! Sitting by the local creek one afternoon, soaking up some late summer sun, pondering this dilemma, I watched the dragonflies dart to and fro in the sparkling light, and the perfect idea came to me: A colorful double knit hat, with dragonflies to represent summer days, worked in jewel tones of dragonflies, sunshine and sparkling water-drops, colors which would make me happy and a hat that would keep me warm and remind me all winter long that longer days are right around the corner!
The name Odonata (Odonata is an order of insects, encompassing dragonflies and damselflies.) to me has a beautiful ring to it and makes me think ‘Ode to summer’ which is what this hat truly is!

Malabrigo Yarns ‘Rastita’ (100% Merino wool, 310 yards/283 m,
3 oz/100 g)
1 skein each Color A (Black) and Color B (Solis)

Needles
US Size 6 (4 mm) DPNs or 16” circular needle, or size to obtain gauge
2 US Size 6 (4 mm) 32” circular needles for invisible cast on only
1 cable needle or DPN as help needle for decreases

Gauge
18 st pairs and 32 rows = 4” on US6 (4 mm) needles in double knit stockinette

Notions
1 stitch marker

Finished Sizes
18”(20”, 24”)/ 46(51, 61) cm circumference, 8½”/21.5 cm high for all sizes
to fit a head circumference of up to 20”, 23”, 25”

Die ersten kalten Herbstnächte bringen Gedanken an skandinavische Skipullover und bunte ‘Fair-Isle’ Schneeflocken. Aber meist bin ich noch gar nicht in Winterstimmung und dann, in den kalten, dunklen Nächten, sehne ich mich nach den trägen, warmen Tagen des Spätsommers mit dem Summen der Bienen in der milden Luft.
Was nun? Schneeflockenmuster gehen mir im Herbst noch ganz gegen den Strich. Aber eine farbenfrohe Doppelstrick-Mütze mit Libellen als Motiv, dafür könnte ich mich schon mehr begeistern.
In bunten Farbtönen als Erinnerung an Sommertage, glänzende Wassertropfen und Spaziergänge am Bachufer. Eine Mütze, die warm hält und Farben, die mich den ganzen Winter lang glücklich machen und daran erinnern, dass die warme Zeit gerade nur noch ein paar Monate entfernt ist!
Odonata (Odonata ist eine Ordnung im Insektenreich, zu der Libellen und Wasserjungfern gehören) hat für mich einen schönen Klang, und ich denke immer ‘Ode an den Sommer’ und das passt ja eigentlich genau für diese Mütze!
