One of my favorite parts of designing is collaborating with local yarn stores, dyers, and other designers. When Trish of Yarn Social asked me to design with a colorway created for her store by a local indie dyer, Apothefaery Fabrications, I was thrilled. That excitement was doubled when Trish shared the inspiration behind the colorway, a sculpture called Sheep Piece by Henry Moore that lives in the sculpture garden at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

A favorite of mine as well, Sheep Piece is part of a large outdoor sculpture park that reflects the Nelson-Atkin’s ongoing commitment to providing a world-class art museum experience.

This cowl is my attempt to honor that inspiration and another rather famous element at the Nelson, the shuttlecock sculptures that dominate the lawn. Created with a simple repeating pattern of dropped stitches and eyelet triangles, alternating with rows of garter stitch, this cowl is a simple, relaxing knit that yields stunning results. Knit flat, the Of Sheep and Shuttlecocks cowl can be made with one or two (or more!) skeins of DK, so you can adjust it to the perfect length for you!

If you find yourself in Kansas City, make sure to go visit both Yarn Social and the Nelson-Atkins! And don’t forget to try the barbecue!

Extra special thanks to my beautiful mom, for her willingness to be my model!
