The Of Tarth shawl is the ultimate beginner-friendly shawl pattern. It is knitted in an easy to remember combination of a simple lace pattern and garter stitch. This pattern can be used to make a shawl of any size - you can make anything from a tiny bandana to an enormous blanket-sized shawl.
When I started knitting my original grey shawl, the texture of the knitted fabric was starting to remind me of the stone walls on medieval castles, and that of course reminded me of my old favorite TV show - Game of Thrones, obviously! Brienne of Tarth was always my favorite character, so I thought this pattern could be a nice little tribute to her. Even if you’re the most badass knight in all the Seven Kingdoms, you probably need a cozy shawl too keep you warm when winter is coming.

This pattern is mostly gauge flexible, meaning that you can use almost any yarn and still get a great result.
The original grey shawl has a gauge of 20st=10 cm/4 inches. I used Madelinetosh merino light , which is a fingering weight yarn, 100 gram=380 meters/400 yards.
I used 4 skeins of yarn, which is equal to 1520 meters or 400 grams of yarn. For the rust colored shawl, I only used 1100 meters or 300 grams of yarn, and it still ended up being huge.

I held a strand of silk mohair double with the fingering weight yarn for extra fluffiness, this is optional but really makes a huge difference. If you are using two yarns held double, you will need the same amount of meters/yards for both kinds of yarn.
This pattern should work with anything from a thin lace yarn to worsted weight yarn, although as of now it has only been tested with fingering weight yarn.
