A cubit is the length between the wrist and the elbow, which was more relevant to the socks I designed when I came up with this stitch pattern inspired by Merike Saarnit. The effect of the slipped stitches also reminds me of the stick figures of cubes I drew as a girl, so let’s pretend the word is a neologism for the little triangles which are cube-bits.

The pattern is written for three colors of fingering weight yarn. The yardage given is the total yardage, about 350 yds is needed for each color as written. The design is easily adaptable to other weights and number of colors. It would be a wonderful way to combine leftovers from favorite projects. If you use a different yarn, you’ll want to use a needle that gives you a smooth stockinette fabric with a nice drape. The stitch pattern can be worked in any multiple of 4 stitches. Each striped section should use ¼ of your yarn in each color.

With a little coaching this cowl could be made by an adventurous beginner who has mastered good tension. The pattern is written for magic loop, but is easily adapted to any method for working in the round.

The yardage specified in Ravelry includes 10% margin for safety.
