Upon request I have transformed the Old Shale patterns to suit worsted weight yarns. This is the pattern for all of you who wants a faster knit, and/or a thicker garment. This is a really fast knit:)
The lace of the hem and fronts are identical from the “original”.
And, apart from the heavier weight, there are only 2 differences:

• the neckline is slightly deeper
• the sleeves are more fitted around the cuffs, and with regular increases. This is to avoid bulky-ness around the cuffs.

Construction
The lower body is worked bottom-up and flat to underarms.
The sleeves are worked bottom-up and in-the-round to underarms.
Body and sleeves are joined, and upper body is worked in one piece. There are NO SEAMS.
The button-bands are integrated in the knitting.

Sizes
6 – 12 mo: 50 cm = 19.5”/ 18 mo – 2 years: 55 cm = 21.5” / 2 – 3 years: 60 cm = 23.5” 4 – 6 years 65 cm = 25.5”/ 6 – 8 years: 70 cm = 27.5” / 9 – 10 years: 76 cm = 29.5”

Materials
Yarn: I recommend that you use a worsted weight yarn with a good stitch-definition to work the cardigan. It should be knit to gauge, and if it is machine-washable it’s even better. I used the worsted weight yarn, “Rios”, from Malabrigo to work the cardigan.This yarn comes in skeins of 100 grams/3.52 oz, and 192 m/210 yards. You will need approximately 300/340/380/440/550/700 m = 327/371/414/480/600/763 yards of this specific yarn to work the cardigan. Needles: a circular needle, 80 cm/32” long, size 4.5 mm/US7, to work the body. A set of dpns, size 4.5 mm/US7 to work the sleeves. A circular, or straight needles, size 3.5 mm/US4 to work the neckline. Needle-size is a recommendation only, take time to check your gauge. Notions: 6 stitch-markers, buttons 12 – 13 mm/0.5” across. Stitch-holders. Tapestry needle. (Row counter).

Gauge
21 sts and 28 rows/rounds in stockinette sts = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4”
