When I first made my Old Shale Cardigan for babies/toddlers and a follow-up for girls I received LOTS of messages asking if I could turn this pattern into adult-sizes. And I agree, this design is just perfect for a baby, a wee, a teenager, an adult…. Here it is - and now the pattern ranges from size 30.5” to 51.5” (finished chest).
The design is is almost identical to the child-version - with the exception of adding the Old Shale lace-pattern to the cuffs as well.
Wouldn’t it be lovely to dress several generations in the same design?
The design An easy knit! Classic, wearable cardigan that goes with just about anything:)) The Old Shale lace-pattern embellish the hem and cuffs. Along the fronts the old shale-lace is transitioned into a simple, lovely lace-pattern that gives just enough interest. And it was an easy decision to create raglan-decreases even for the adult sizes: this gives a splendid and flattering fit for the upper body.
Construction The cardigan is worked bottom-up and is completely seamless. The lower body starts with a small garter edge, followed by the Old Shale lace-pattern. The main-body is worked in stockinette st with a lace-pattern bordering the fronts. The button-bands are integrated in the knitting. Sleeves are worked in-the-round and bottom-up starting with the Old Shale lace-pattern, followed by stockinette st and regular increases. At underarms body and sleeves are joined and the upper body is worked in one piece and with raglan-decreases.
The design is without waist-shaping, but you could easily modify and shape the cardigan as you like.
Sizes Finished bust-measurements are 30.5/32.5/34.5/36.5/38.5/40.5/42.5/44/46/48/50/51.5”. The sample is made with approximately 0.5” ease.
Yarn and needles I used Rowans “Felted Tweed DK” to work the cardigan. This wool comes in balls of 191yards/175m. You will need 6/6/6/7/7/8/8/8/9/9/10/10 balls of this wool to work the cardi. The whole garment is knit using the same needle size. A circular needle is needed for the lower and upper body, dpns (or a circular needle if working the magic loop) for working the sleeves.
I used needle size 3.5mm/US4 - PLEASE NOTE that this is a suggestion only, for best result you need to work a swatch!
Gauge 24 sts and 30 rows = 10cm x 10cm/4” x 4”
