“Old Shale Cardigan for big girls” and
“Old Shale Cardigan for ladies”.

Old Shale Cardigan got its name from the lace-pattern used for the hem. This pattern goes a long way back and is also known as the “Feather and Fan pattern”. Normally it goes over 18 sts, I adjusted it to 11 sts to get in proportion with a tiny cardigan for a tiny baby:)

Construction The cardigan is worked bottom up and flat to underarms, sleeves are worked in the round to underarms, body and sleeves are joined and upper body is worked back and forth with regular raglan-decreases. Buttonbands are integrated and there is no seaming.

Sizes Finished chest measurements are 16/18/19.25/21” which should correspond with 3m/6m/9m to 1y/1y to 18m. This is very roughly as babies differs so much! Better to work a larger size….

Material Yarn.I suggest that you use a fingering weight yarn with great stitch definition that works up to 28 sts to 10cm/4”. I used “Esther” from Permin which comes in balls of 252yards. You will need 2/2/2/3 balls of this specific yarn,
Needles: I used a long, circular needle 3mm/US2.5 for the lower and upper body, dpns 3mm/US2.5 for the sleeves. Use needle size to obtain gauge.
Buttons: 6 buttons (or more or less according to your taste) - approximately 1cm/0.3” across.
The pattern The pattern comes with clear instructions and all necessary stitch-counts and measurements are given in cm’s as well as inches. The 2 lace-patterns comes with charts as well as written instructions. There is a schematic with measurements.
