This is an intermediate pattern that uses stockinette stitch, short rows, simple embroidery (French Knots), and straight stitches. The large pattern is worked on size 8 needles with approximately 240, yards of worsted weight lavender wool yarn, approximately 140 yards worsted weight darker lavender or medium purple wool yarn, approximately 75 yards of pale peach worsted weight yarn, 20 yards of light beige yarn in a worsted weight yarn, approximately 10 yards of yellow yarn and scarps of black yarn for the iris. The suckers are created with a variety of yarn weights, from sport weight, worsted weight and bulky weight wool yarns. These are the directions for the large octopus which is about 24 inches in length. The small octopus can be created with sport weight yarn on size 3 needles and is approximately 12 inches in length.
Large octopus gauge on Worsted weight wool yarn on size 8 needles - 4 sts and 5.5 rows to an inch.
