Oma Leni's Mittens
Errata (pattern update after this weekend):
First round on “thumb gore” should read:
Next round: sl m, k 3, m1, k 10(11)15, m1, k1, m1, k1, k 12(13)17, m1, k3
These are classic plain and warm mittens. The model for this pattern was a pair of mittens in my mother-in-law’s stash. They were made for her, by her mother, when she was a teenager, back in the 50’s. They still look good and the fit is perfect. On the plain upper side of the mitten, you can add some nice embroidery or any other decoration that you like. Use this pattern as a base.
On request I’ve added a larger size - to fit a mens M/L hand.
If you use a slightly bulkier yarn with gauge 17sts on 4.5mm needles, you can knit the S/M size, and still get the larger size. “Linnea’s mittens” in my projects were made like that.
Size: S/M - (M/L) - XL (mens M/L)
Finished measurements: S/M: 9 cm/3.5” X 24.5 cm/9.5” (M/L: 10 cm/4” X 25 cm/10”) XL: 11 cm/4.5” X 30cm/12”
(Width over palm X length from wrist to tip)
Material: about 100-150g or 160-165m (175-180-190 yards) of Aran/ 10 ply yarn (rather bulky with an original gauge 16.5cm per 10cm/4”), US 7 – 4.5 mm DPN needles, Tapestry needle
Gauge: 18 sts and 25 rounds in stockinette sts using 4.5mm needles = 10cm/4”. Note that you’ll be knitting a fabric that is slightly tighter than yarn calls for.
Skills needed: k, p, k2tog, skpo, m1
But you can ALWAYS learn this easily by watching tutorials as you go along!
Errata: Repeat increasing for thumb like this, adding 1 stitch on each side of the thumb gore on every 3rd round for a total of 5(5)6 times = 42(44)54 sts on your needles.
This pattern has been proofread by members of The testing Pool. Thank you!
