Oma's Baskets
NOTE: this is a pattern recipe with information to make a basket or plate shaped coiled vessel. Yardage information included will make either one plate or two baskets, but can vary depending on your tension.
These vessels came to be with a little change in hands. The original chunky lengths of crochet chains were made by Oma (not mine, but someone I know) and I set about using the crochet chains as cords for coiled vessel making crocheted together.
You can find ~150 g balls of crochet chains at Little Blue Fibre Studio (in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) made by Oma, but the recipe includes directions for making the crochet chain - you can start from scratch as well. It’s a great way to use up odd bits of yarn and add a little splash of colour to your yarn related decor. I’ve been using the baskets as a yarn bowl or as a place to store small bits of wool. The plates are excellent for displaying larger items.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Familiarity with crochet stitches and open to some trial and error. The trickiest part is getting started, once you have a few coiled rounds worked, you can continue coiling to make a plate shape or start stacking the coils to make a basket shape.
