Simple stitches make a big impact with the Ombre Cowl! The pattern is easy enough to be accessible to a beginner, with the color changes doing most of the work.

The pattern includes exact stitch counts for the yarn and gauge given, but there are also a variety of customization options so you can make it your own. You can adjust height or width, use a different yarn or hook, or create a unique color blend. Plus, you can always flip the finished object upside down for a new look with the same cowl!

Sample used Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Lace (lace weight; 100% alpaca; 437yds/50g), 280yds/32g in 500 Black (color A), 390yds/45g in 100 White (color B), 280yds/32g in 3730 (color C)

Gauge
10 sts and 18 rows = 4”/10cm in hdc. Gauge swatch is in the round and measurements are taken after blocking. Gauge is not essential as a cowl that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the cowl can also be easily adjusted in height and circumference.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors
The Ombre Cowl works with just about any yarn and weight. It’s a perfect scrappy project and it works for solids, speckles, and variegated yarns. The sample is shown in lace weight but it works in anything up to a bulky - just bear in mind that the yarn is held double, so bigger yarn weights will result in a very thick cowl.

When worked as stated, you’ll need approximately 30% of your total yardage for each of colors A and C, 40% of total yardage for color B. The cowl is fully adjustable though, and that ratio can be customized to work with any yardage per color.

Skills Required
This is a beginner friendly pattern. It uses hdc and ch sts, working in the round, and changing colors.

Construction
The cowl is worked seamlessly in one piece from the bottom up.

Modifications and Adjustments
Notes are included for adjusting the following: adjusting the circumference and height; adjusting the number of colors; customizing the size of each stripe; working it with scraps

Overview of the Finished Object
The cowl is a basic tube. It features five stripes - the first is all color A, the second is a combo of colors A and B, the third is all B, the fourth is a combo of colors B and C, the fifth is all color C.
