With their knit-purl textures and simple lace, these mitts make the most of the tonal variations in hand-dyed sock yarns—but they’ll look great in solid and semi-solid colors, too.
As I developed this design, I experimented with different options for the arm, trying out a longer lace section as well as a shorter lace section followed by rings of purl rounds. In the end, I really couldn’t decide which option I liked best! And when I shared them with some friends, an equal number liked each of the options. So I knit one of each and included instructions for both of them in the pattern.
You can knit one of each, as shown in the sample photos, or knit two matching mitts using either option. From the thumb gusset onwards, instructions are the same for both options.
Sizes: S and M/L
Finished (Blocked) Measurements:
Hand circumference: Size S 6 inches/15 cm unstretched at widest part of palm; Size M/L 7 inches/18 cm unstretched at widest part of palm
Length (both sizes): 11.25 inches/29 cm from cast-on to bind-off
The shaping of these mitts creates a somewhat loose, slouchy fit on the arm and a closer fit on the hand. They are intended to be worn with zero ease to 1.5 inches/4 cm of negative ease around the palm. Size S will comfortably fit a palm circumference of 6–7.5 inches/15–19 cm (measured above the thumb) and Size M/L will fit a palm circumference of 7–8.5 inches/19–22 cm (measured above thumb). If you prefer a very snug fit, consider going down a needle size.
