I have made this socks in many different sock yarns and I think the firmness of my crocheting makes more difference than the yarn does. So if your crocheting is very firm, use 3mm needle or the widest alternative.

If you want to make longer socks, you can start with 115+1 sts and change the 50sts for the back of the sock with 80, and make short rows of 15-30-40 instead of 10-20 for the leg.
