From Cinderella to Rapunzel, fairy tales leave their marks on all of us at an early age, and they’ve been doing so for centuries, shifting and changing a little bit with every new generation.
This hat scream fairy tale to me--maybe it’s the maybe it’s the cozy, fuzzy yarn I chose or that the bold cluster cables remind me of a certain princess’s long hair tumbling out of a tower. Either way, I think that like our favorite fairytales, this hat will stand the test of time and prove infinitely adaptable. This story is what you make of it, but like all fairy tales, it starts with a Once Upon a Time…
The Once Upon a Time Hat is knitted from the brim up with a plush, double folded ribbed brim and cabled body.
Size:
48.25cm/19in circumference, unstretched. The hat is designed to have 5-7.5cm/2-3in negative ease for a snug fit.
Gauge:
16.8 stitches x 20 rounds per 10cm/4in on 5mm needles in cable pattern.
Yarn:
Bulky weight - 40-50g
The sample was knit using one skein of Sandnes Garn Kos in the color Plum (4050).
Note: I recommend choosing a blown yarn as a plied bulky weight might be too heavy and dense, especially with the brim folded. Some other blown yarns similar to Kos include Gepard Puno, Knitpicks Wonderfluff, and Viking of Norway Alpaca Bris.
Needles:
The pattern is written using small circular needles and magic loop, but can be worked using double pointed needles, depending on your preference. You’ll need 5mm needles, or size required to meet gauge, for the body of the hat and 4.5mm needles or one size smaller than the body needles for the ribbing.
