One Day, One Skein Modern Christmas Stocking
I knit Christmas stockings for my husband and two kids almost ten years ago that were colorful shades of red, green, navy, and white with our names knit in intarsia and each with its own holiday-themed fair-isle designs. They are lovely, but my son’s turned out longer than the rest (probably because his was knit years after I knit the first ones, and it’s always annoyed me) and I’ve recently wanted simpler, more modern stockings to complement the color scheme of our living room. I designed this stocking so that it could be knit quickly, flat and seamed (my preference as 16” size 13 needles hurt my hands) with only 1 skein of yarn and while watching just a few episodes of the Amazing Race. Directions for knitting the round, if that’s your preference, are given at the very end. I added a colorful pompom garland and literally jumped up and down when I found the monogram felt ornaments to identify each stocking’s owner. I knit 7 of these (4 people, 3 dogs) over the last two weeks of November.
The stocking is worked from the top-down in one piece, with the heel incorporated with German Short Rows. The toe is finished with a three-needle-bind-off and then you sew up the seam to the top of the stocking and finish with a hanging loop.
Instructions for modifying the pattern to knit the stocking in the round are also given.
