On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong declared “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind,” as he stepped onto the Moon surface for the first time. This shawl, featuring the iconic Moon footprint, is my tribute to the first moon Apollo landing 50 years ago.

This crescent shaped shawl is worked top down. It starts with a long garter tab and is work primarily in garter stitch. The foot prints are worked with closed cables and the edge finished in a feather and fan stitch. The foot prints continue through space, the sky, and finally touching down on Earth. The finished size 22 inches depth and 84 inches tip to tip after blocking.

My design is dedicated to the “giant leap” made possible by those involved in that first Moon landing. In the shawl, four footprints “step” from the Earth to the Moon. That first heel impression on the Earth signifies public support for the NASA mission. The remainder of that footprint is the sky layer, representing those who developed the technology to break the bonds of Earth, be it innovative designs to manufacturing skill. Two footprints span the vastness of space; dedicated to the ground support personnel connecting the astronauts to home. Finally, the footprint on the Moon surface recognizes the Apollo astronauts’ dedication and sacrifice.
