One Step Ahead Beanie
About this design
This beanie was inspired by some experimentation with a blue/aqua-toned Magic Ball and two interesting slipstitch patterns that I found in my stitch dictionaries. I really liked the way that the garter stitch sections accommodated the knots in my Magic Ball and also allowed the colour changes to really pop against the dark magenta contrasting colour that I had chosen. By the time I’d finished my first test knit I was getting really excited about colour possibilities so I started to play with variegated dyed yarns and solid colours and found that this pattern is incredibly versatile when it comes to pairing colours. I even did a three-colour version to use up some oddments of hand dyed yarn and totally fell in love with the end result.
This pattern has so much going for it—the two different slipstitch patterns are easy to memorise, it’s a great stash-buster project, you can experiment with colour and it is quick to knit. Plus there is the added bonus of creating a one-off Magic Ball that will make this beanie totally unique. I hope you fall in love with this pattern as much as I have.

Tension
18 stitches x 40 rows in the Stairs Pattern knitted in the round on 4.5 mm (US size 7, UK size 7) needles on a 10 cm (4 in) blocked swatch. A reasonable match for tension is important for this pattern to ensure a good fit. If your gauge is significantly different, move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time. Also, you may find that you use more or less yarn if your gauge is significantly different.
Yarn
Any double knit/8 ply yarn that knits to the tension gauge. Two contrasting colours are required, one of which (the contrast colour) could be a Magic Ball.
Main Colour approx 94 m/103 yds (this is approximately a 50g ball of yarn)

ERRATUM - I accidentally inverted the colour instructions for the slipped stitches in the crown section of the beanie. The slipped stitches in the ladder section should be worked in main colour, not contrast colour. I have uploaded a corrected version on 14 November 2015 (Version 1.1). Please accept my apologies for this glitch.
