The Stairsteps stitch pattern can be found in The Knit Stitch Pattern Handbook by Melissa Leapman. The stitch pattern is carried into the crown of the hat. This hat is not difficult to make. Just follow the directions, taking one step at a time.

K: Knit
K1-tbl: Knit 1 through the back loop
K-fb: Knit into front and back of 1 stitch
K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together
P: Purl
P2tog: Purl 2 stitches together
