The body of the crane is knit in one piece in garter stitch separated by “corners” of slip stitches. The wings are knit onto the body. The head and neck are knit as one piece and sewn or slip stitch crocheted to the body. The tail is knit and attached in the same way. Yarn ends are used to sew the wings and base into shape. Finally an I cord hanging loop is added.

The red crane is knit of worsted weight yarn (15 grams or .5 oz) on #3 3.25 mm DPN, details are worked with a Size D crochet hook. I am not a fan of felting, so to create a stiff knitted fabric, I use a much smaller needle than usual for the weight of the yarn.

The green crane is knit of doubled worsted weight yarn (41 grams or 1 3/8 oz) on size 8 5mm DPN.

The body and the wings are knit modularly, the head/neck and tail are knit separately and affixed to the body. An optional hanging loop is made of I cord.

Finished size of the red crane is about 5 1/2” from wingtip to wingtip and 6 1/2” from nose to tail. The green crane is 9” by 9”.

This crane was a fast knit and is a good way to use small bits of yarn.

The pattern is currently being professionally edited and has been tested by one knitter other than myself. Edits, corrections and updates will be posted as needed. I am also available for any questions and I have a photo tutorial of each step that I can make available.

The lizard at the bottom is included for no other reason that to rejoice in the advent of Spring!
