Onward, The Hat is designed to use a limited colour palette of natural Icelandic yarn. The yarn knits up quickly to make a warm and water-resistant hat.

Frequent colour changes make this hat ideal for beginner stranded colour knitters. For spinners, this is an excellent opportunity to knit with handspun Icelandic yarn.

Inspired by the Icelandic sheep who live with their shepherdess on The Last Dance Ranch in “New Iceland”, Onward, The Hat, represents the way forward early Icelandic settlers found when they came to Manitoba’s Interlake area around Gimli.

Onward, The Hat, was designed for the 135th anniversary of Islendingadagurinn (New Iceland Festival) at Gimli in 2024, where Icelandic sheep are always the breed of choice.

Three colours of yarn are used:

  • 50 g main colour (white)
  • 15 g contrast colour 1 (black)
  • 7 g contrast colour 2 (grey)
