This is pattern was featured in Godey’s 1861 and can be interpreted in a few ways. The pattern recommends fingering-weight yarn, which produces a small headdress-style garment. It doesn’t fully cover the head. This is a period-appropriate and lovely-looking item.

The pattern also featured an image, which looks very much like a winter-styled hood intended for warmth. It is possible that they intended for you to double-strand the wool and didn’t feel the
need to state it plainly in the pattern. For example, the Marpossa headdress/hood (Godey’s 1860) says, “It may, of course, be made of double instead of single wool, in which case it will be
considerably warmer.”

I decided to go with the thicker winter hood option. This hood is a very simple knit; however, the trimming is a lot of picking up stitches and tedious work. If you crochet, adding a shell border to the hood is a period appropriate substitution, and easier.

The pink hood is the same pattern, worked in fingering and trimmed with lace weight wool. Omit the crown and extra borders.
