Organised Chaos Set
This set comprises of a headband and jar/pot/cup cosy full of entwining twisted stitches making for a seemingly chaotic tangled trail, but which is actually organised into a reflective symmetry of stitches starting with individual columns that tangle and twirl together before separating again.
The headband is started with a provisional cast on and knit flat, through half of a plain back piece, then a central panel of a pattern of crossing twisted stitches, followed by the second half of the back piece, which will be joined at the back with the first half back piece once it’s provisional cast on is undone. It can be knit all in one yarn or use up leftovers in a complimentary yarn for the simple back piece.
The cosy is knit in the same way with a provisional cast on to be joined later, with a simple half chart repeat in the same pattern as the headband and finished off with a basic and stretchy garter stitch back that you can customise to be either in the same yarn as the front, a different yarn or even scrappy stripes as in my sample. This cosy, in its smaller size than the headband, also works as a great gauge piece to be worked before the headband. Both pieces are great scrap busters and perfect gift knits!
Knitting skills & techniques used:
Advanced Intermediate: Provisional Cast on/unzipping, knitting, purling. The stitch pattern is formed by Right and Left leaning twists (RT & LT). Kitchener Stitch or 3 Needle Bind off to join both pieces.
Materials:
The yardage amounts shown are a little over what was used in view of rounding up to give you several grams room regarding what’s required and are an approximate guide.
Requires approx 110 yards / 101 metres DK weight yarn for the 2 pieces combined (minus the narrower knit back of the headband) & 51 yards / 47 metres of sport / plump fingering weight yarn for the back of the headband. That individually breaks down as:
Headband - around 55 yards of DK (Centre) plus 51 yards sport / plump fingering (back)
Cosy - around 55 yards of DK (throughout) (This can be made up with as many colourways as you wish to make use of scraps and such, or make it in a single colourway, but if you want to follow the sample pieces, the details are laid out below:
Whilst any yarns of equivalent weights will work fine, for the samples I used:
(The twisted stitches central panel of both pieces):
Hook & Cwtch, DK Superwash Merino, 100g, 246 yards / 225 meters, 75% Superwash Merino Wool & 25% Nylon, River Confetti colourway
(For the back of the headband):
The Wool Barn, Cashmere Sock, 100g, 382 yards / 349 meters, 80% Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere & 10% Manufactured Fibres – Nylon / polyamide, Silver Fern colourway
(For the back of the cosy):
And I just used around 10g of scraps of various yarns including those above, in scrappy stripes
Needles: 3.5mm / US 4 (single or small circular) (& 3rd needle if joining by 3 needle bind-of)
Notions: 2 stitch markers per piece, tapestry needle for in weaving ends & if joining by Kitchener.
