Orion
Orion uses short row shaping and a syncopated welt pattern to make a more interesting vertically-ribbed wrap/outsized scarf. It’s a nice near-match for Todd Hat and Practical Hat when knit in coordinating yarn.
Gauge is 15 sts and 26 rows in 4”, in pattern. Gauge is pretty important to your final scarf dimensions, and especially vital to the yarn estimate for this one—this shawl as shown uses almost every single yard in 3 skeins of Malabrigo Rios (colorway shown: Frank Ochre). If you know from the outset that you’re not going to check your gauge on a scarf project, having extra yarn on hand would be good insurance.
To knit Orion as shown, you’ll need:
-3 skeins Malabrigo Rios
-One long (40”+) circular needle in US6-7/4.0-4.5mm, or the size you need to work at the recommended gauge, used to work flat.
-A tapestry needle, for weaving in ends
-Scissors, technically, for trimming off the ends after you’ve woven them in
-Some familiarity/comfort/willingness to learn the basic wrap-and-turn short row technique
