Ornamental
Top-down and seamless, this shrug starts with a cast-on at the back neck and a few rows to create the top back. This piece is turned, and stitches are picked up on either side of the neck to create the shoulder spans. Each shoulder is extended and shaped separately, and then the sleeve caps are picked up from along the edges of the shoulders to establish the body & sleeve section. After a dramatic increase over the crest of each shoulder, the shrug is worked in one piece, with the sleeve stitches increasing frequently. The front and back panels also get increases to shape the jacket and armscye edges. The sleeve stitches are then separated, and the body of the shrug is completed in one piece.
The body edging is worked in the round, in a 1x1 twisted ribbing.
Sleeve stitches are then picked up, and finished in one of eight configurations. There are four lengths (butterfly, short, mid, and 3/4 length) and two fabric options (drop-stitch/open or no-drop/closed rib fabric). The sleeved options are finished with 1x1 half-twisted ribbing.
There are 22 sizes (28-70 inch/71-178 cm chest) available.
Because Ornamental is worked in aran weight and the design is cropped, it knits up pretty quickly! And because the sleeves can feature the dropped-stitch fabric, it can use less yarn than you might think after first glance at the finished object.
